The monk Synesios was a musician, cantor, and copyist. Very little
is known of his life, as is usually the case with monks who have forsaken the world. His oeuvre, however, is extensive, though largely unknown. His musical compositions are numerous, and some of them are still sung today.
He was born in Mytilene, while his family probably originated from Aivali (Kydonies) in Asia Minor, and thus bore within him the great spiritual tradition of the East. He lived humbly in the lviron Monastery, where he adorned with the cantor's art the lectern in his monastery and elsewhere on the Holy Mountain at the vigils of feast days at its sacred foundations.
God had endowed him with the angelic gift of music, and he did not hide away his talent, but worked with zeal and humility to increaseit. And having cultivated it, he offered it in obedience in the
service of the Church and in the worship of God. The issuing for the first time of a CD of compositions of the monk Synesios Iviritis in the 'Classic Church Music' series of the Centre for
Studies of the Psaltic Art serves as a modest commemoration of this worthy but inconspicuous child of our Holy Monastery, and is a source of special joy and honor to us who are called to continue the tradition of the Fathers of the Holy Mountain of old.
Archimandrite Nathanael, Abbot of the Holy Iviron Monastery
